Prince Harry and Meghan’s Neighbor Spills the Truth — ‘They Turned Me Away at the Door!’
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made headlines not just for their historic exit from the British monarchy, but also for their transatlantic relocation. While the couple initially settled in Vancouver, Canada, with their son Archie, they soon moved to Montecito, California—a quiet, upscale enclave nestled between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.
However, according to one former neighbor, their arrival in Montecito was met with polite but distant reception. Navy veteran Frank McGinity, who lived near the Sussexes, recently shared his experiences in his memoir Get Off Your Street. In the book, McGinity recalls an early attempt to welcome the couple that didn’t go as planned.
“I have a big house next to Harry and Meghan’s property,” he wrote. “They live on old McCormick property and I went up to their gate with the films on a CD, but they weren’t interested.”
As reported by the Mirror, The films McGinity offered were historical documentaries about Montecito, intended to help the newcomers learn more about their new neighborhood. But, as he explained, “The gate guy turned me away and wouldn’t take the film, just saying, ‘They’re not interested.’ I was trying to be neighbourly. If they were interested in the neighbourhood, I’ve got a lot of information.”
Speaking to the Montecito Journal, McGinity expressed surprise at the couple’s choice to settle in the quiet and mature Riven Rock Estate. “We don’t see them very much around here,” he said. “It’s surprising they came here. People are typically older. It’s where the elephants come to die.”
In his memoir, McGinity also reflected on the environmental challenges of the area, specifically recalling the devastating January 2018 mudslides that swept through the region and left 23 people dead across Southern California.
Describing the destruction, he wrote, “But half of this beautiful estate, which Stanley [McCormick] created, turned to a sea of mud on January 9th, 2018. Four homes were completely destroyed. Our home took a big hit. The mud entered the rear of the house and disseminated our office, entry hall, and back bedroom.”
He continued, “There were boulders so large in the rooms, our contractor had to chisel them apart in order to remove them. I found a TV from the office and a mattress near our front gate—500 feet away. Can you imagine the fury of that mudslide?”
While Prince Harry and Meghan remain largely out of the public eye in Montecito, their presence still stirs curiosity—and, for some, a touch of neighborly disappointment.
