Royal inheritance mystery: The Truth about Harry and William’s uncle’s will
Prince William and Prince Harry have been left out of a £1.5 million inheritance following the death of their uncle, Lord Robert Fellowes, sparking speculation over the royal brothers’ exclusion from the estate.
Lord Fellowes, 82, who passed away earlier this year, was married to Lady Jane Spencer, the older sister of the late Princess Diana. His will, recently approved by the High Court, details an estate valued at £1,517,418—with a deduction of £4,000 to cover legal costs and fees.
Despite longstanding family ties and his former role as a trusted aide to the late Queen Elizabeth II, Lord Fellowes did not leave any portion of his estate to the Duke of Sussex or the Prince of Wales. Instead, the vast majority of his wealth has been left to his widow, Lady Jane.
The will also includes modest charitable donations: £1,000 to a local hospice, £500 to St Mary’s Church—where his memorial service was held—and £5,000 to his alma mater, Eton College.
According to The Sun, the lack of bequests to William and Harry may reflect Lord Fellowes’ close focus on immediate family. A distinguished public servant, he served as Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretary from 1990 to 1999 and previously worked in the royal household from 1977, during which time he became a key adviser to the Queen and Princess Diana’s family.
The brothers did attend his memorial service, held in Norfolk in August 2024, but reports at the time suggested they remained distant throughout the event, continuing a now long-running estrangement.
Reverend Dan Tansley, who led the memorial service, told reporters: “It wasn’t a tremendous shock William was there, as that was always a possibility, but I suppose it was more of a surprise that Harry had come. I don’t recollect them speaking to each other, but there were a lot of family members and friends speaking to them.”
He added: “It would have meant a lot to Lord Robert to have them both at the service because I know both he and his auntie love them both very much.”
The service was seen by royal watchers as a potential moment for reconciliation between the brothers. However, with no visible signs of warming relations, and no shared inheritance from their uncle, the rift between Prince William and Prince Harry appears to remain unresolved.
