Meghan and Harry Promote Online Safety After Time100 Philanthropy Snub
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made a significant announcement through their Archewell Foundation, just days after being notably left off Time Magazine’s prestigious Time100 Philanthropy list.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were absent from the list that celebrates the world’s most impactful philanthropists and changemakers. The snub came despite their recent appearance at a Time-organised summit honoring influential global figures.
In contrast, Prince William and Kate Middleton were named among those recognized for their charitable efforts, further highlighting the omission of Harry and Meghan.
In response, the Sussexes shifted focus to their ongoing work in digital safety. A new post on the Archewell Foundation’s website, titled “Safety by Design Wins: Accountable Tech,” spotlighted a recent study by Accountable Tech concerning teen safety on Instagram.
“This week, The Archewell Foundation is highlighting Accountable Tech who recently published a study highlighting gaps in recent protections put in place for teens on Instagram,” the statement read.
The study, according to Archewell, revealed inconsistencies in how Instagram applies its safety settings to teen accounts. “The report focuses on inconsistencies in the application of settings for Instagram Teen accounts and ‘sensitive content’ within Meta’s framework, including sexualized content and alcohol-related content reaching all the teen accounts used in the experiment.”
The foundation emphasized the importance of allowing independent researchers access to platform data to help improve the effectiveness of online safety measures. “This study highlights how important it is for platforms to allow data access for independent researchers to both assist in improving the effectiveness of safeguards and ensuring enforcement of safeguards and regulations – to the extent they exist – can be comprehensive,” the statement continued.
Archewell reinforced its commitment to ensuring that digital technology is safe for young users. “The Archewell Foundation believes the technology in our families’ lives should be safe by design. Safety by design is an approach to child online safety that prioritizes accountability, user empowerment, and transparency,” the statement said.
The foundation praised global efforts by parents, young people, and advocates to build a better, safer internet. “Around the world, young people, parents, and advocates are ‘building a better online world’ by pushing for tech accountability and innovation developed with safety in mind.”
They concluded with a promise: “The Archewell Foundation is committed to uplifting their wins.”
Despite the recent exclusion from the philanthropic spotlight, Harry and Meghan appear determined to remain focused on impactful causes, with digital safety continuing to be a top priority.
