Meghan Wants Harry To Let Go But Royal Rift With King Charles Only Gets Worse
Prince Harry’s rift with King Charles appears as frosty as ever, with no sign of reconciliation in sight. Their relationship is still believed to be at rock bottom, and while Harry has been open about the breakdown, Meghan Markle has chosen to stay publicly silent though that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have her own views behind the scenes.
In a recent interview, Harry confirmed he’s no longer speaking to his father, adding that their relationship has deteriorated so much that King Charles, who is undergoing cancer treatment, won’t even take his calls. The prince even admitted he doesn’t know “how much longer my father has,” fuelling speculation over whether any kind of peace might ever be made.
Meghan, meanwhile, has been focusing her energy elsewhere. She’s thrown herself into developing her lifestyle brand As Ever, lining up new products and continuing work on her Netflix projects and podcast. According to a source close to the couple, while Meghan firmly supports Harry, she reportedly wishes he could move on and be “less burdened” by everything that’s happened.
The insider told PEOPLE that Meghan is “very business about it” and has her sights firmly set on the future. Harry, though, is still “one foot in the past,” especially following his highly publicised court battle over UK security, which he recently lost at the Court of Appeal.
That same loss seemed to trigger his emotional BBC interview, where he opened up about the painful lack of contact with his father. Though Harry insisted the interview wasn’t meant as an attack, royal commentators have pointed out how it would undoubtedly be taken that way inside the Palace — and could push Charles even further away.
Adding fuel to the fire is the aftermath of Harry’s tell-all memoir Spare, which painted the royal family in an unforgiving light. He took aim at his father, called Queen Camilla “dangerous”, and even claimed Prince William physically attacked him. It’s no surprise that forgiveness might not be top of the royal agenda.
Some believe the King should be the one to make the first move, but that doesn’t seem likely right now. According to Palace insiders speaking to PEOPLE, those closest to Charles haven’t exactly been pushing for a family reunion. Prince William reportedly has “no interest” in mending the rift, Camilla is said to “stay out of it”, and the King’s private secretary Sir Clive Alderton is apparently not encouraging any personal outreach either.
Respected royal commentator Valentine Low summed it up by saying, “There is not a good angel in his ear to say, ‘Be a good dad and make the first move.’”
As things stand, it seems Harry is still deeply affected by the estrangement, while Meghan, ever pragmatic, wants to look forward and leave the past behind. The emotional weight of it all is clearly heavy for Harry, who even admitted in his interview, “Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. Of course, they will never forgive me for lots of things.”
For now, the silence from the Palace remains deafening — and Meghan’s quiet push for Harry to live more in the present may be the only gentle voice in his ear.
