GMB’s Ranvir Singh Delivers ‘Disturbing’ Breaking News Live on Air
Viewers of Good Morning Britain were met with “disturbing” breaking news on Thursday (May 22) as it was announced that two Israeli embassy staff members were shot dead outside a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C.
Ranvir Singh joined co-hosts Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway to deliver the shocking report live on air. “Some disturbing breaking news from America,” Singh began. “Two members of staff from the Israeli embassy in Washington have been shot dead outside the city’s Jewish museum. The man and woman were killed as they left an event. The suspect is in custody. Police say he shouted, ‘Free Palestine’ while being detained.”
The deadly shooting occurred at approximately 9:05 p.m. local time (01:05 GMT) in a heavily visited area near several major government buildings, including the FBI’s Washington field office.
According to Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith, the suspect—identified as Elias Rodriguez, 30, of Chicago—opened fire on a group of four individuals outside the museum, fatally striking the two embassy staff members, who were in a relationship. Smith added that Rodriguez was apprehended by security as he attempted to walk inside the museum following the attack.
“We have not had any prior interactions with the suspect,” said Smith during a press briefing. “We don’t see anything in his background that would have placed him on our radar.”
Israeli Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter confirmed during a news conference that the victims, whose names have not been released, were planning to get engaged. The male victim had reportedly purchased an engagement ring earlier in the week and had planned to propose during a trip to Jerusalem.
The attack has prompted outrage both in the United States and abroad, with Israeli officials condemning the act in the strongest terms, told Manchester Evening News.
Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, described the shooting as “a depraved act of antisemitic terrorism.” In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote: “Harming diplomats and the Jewish community is crossing a red line. We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act.”
Former U.S. President Donald Trump also weighed in via Truth Social, stating: “These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA.”
As investigations continue, authorities have increased security around embassies and Jewish institutions in the capital, with officials urging the public to remain vigilant.
