‘You Better Explain!’ Susanna Grills Richard Madeley After Viewers Spot His Arm
Good Morning Britain viewers were left doing a double take on Monday morning after spotting Richard Madeley sporting a cast under his suit. The 69-year-old presenter turned up to the ITV show with his arm in a sling and didn’t waste time explaining what had happened and it turns out it’s been a bit of a chaotic week in the Madeley household.
As Richard settled in alongside co-host Susanna Reid, who clearly clocked the cast immediately, she prompted him with a firm, ‘Richard, you better explain.’ Without missing a beat, he joked, ‘I thought you were going to say, did I have a good break!’ The pair laughed, but then he confirmed things were a little more serious than just a scratch, reported the Express.
“It’s a double fracture of the wrist,” he revealed, explaining the painful moment that led to the injury. “I was walking quite quickly down a steep pavement in France on Friday, and the pavement was loose. It flipped up and it flipped me forward and I thought, am I going to win or will gravity win? And gravity won and I hit the ground hard.”

Despite the accident, Richard still showed up for work, cast and all, smiling through the pain and trying to keep things light. But that wasn’t the only drama he had to deal with. During the same show, he shared that his daughter had her car stolen — not once, but twice — right from their driveway.
It’s not every day you hear about back-to-back car thefts from the same spot, and viewers couldn’t help but feel the Madeley family must be having a bit of a nightmare lately. Richard didn’t go into too much detail about his daughter’s situation but mentioned it as part of the conversation while talking about recent personal setbacks.
Between falling on a dodgy pavement in France and hearing about your daughter’s car being stolen twice, it’s safe to say Richard’s had better weeks. Still, ever the professional, he powered through the show with his usual charm, cast on display and jokes at the ready.
Fans took to social media to share their surprise and sympathy, with many sending well wishes and hoping for a speedy recovery. Others praised him for showing up to work despite what must be a painful injury, joking that even a double fracture isn’t enough to stop Madeley doing his job.
Richard didn’t say how long he’ll be in the cast or whether he’s been advised to rest, but given his upbeat mood, it seems he’s determined to carry on as normal. Whether that includes any more spontaneous trips to France remains to be seen — though he might be keeping a closer eye on the pavements next time.
