Harvey Elliott Hints At Liverpool Exit After Emotional Interview
Harvey Elliott just dropped a big hint that his future might not be with Liverpool, and fans are definitely taking notice. After Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Brighton on Monday, the 22-year-old midfielder opened up about his playing time—or lack of it—and made some eyebrow-raising comments about what’s next for him.
Elliott was given a rare start in the Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium, only his second under head coach Arne Slot. Despite scoring the opening goal of the match and putting in a solid performance, the night ended in disappointment for Liverpool as Brighton came from behind to win, handing the Reds their third straight winless game since clinching the title in April.
After the game, Elliott spoke to Sky Sports and didn’t hold back on how tough the season has been for him personally. “I think I’ve [shown what I can do] this season,” he said. “It’s been hard with how much I’ve played. I’ve tried as hard as I could and whatever happens, happens. It’s football at the end of the day and in my opinion, I just need to do what’s best for my career.”
That comment—”I just need to do what’s best for my career”—definitely sounds like a young player considering his options. And with only one other Premier League start this month, a 3-1 loss at Chelsea, it’s no wonder Elliott is feeling a bit on the outside looking in.
Elliott admitted it’s been frustrating. “It’s a tough one because I think every player wants to play each and every game, each and every minute, but sometimes it’s not going to happen,” he said. “It’s about reflecting and seeing what I can do better in my position and just going from there.”
Still, he’s trying to stay focused on the present, adding, “But you know, I’m here at the moment, still got one game left and I’m fully focused on that.”
That final game comes this Sunday when Liverpool host FA Cup champions Crystal Palace at Anfield. It’s set to be a massive day as the team finally lifts the league trophy in front of their home fans for the first time since 1990. But Elliott made it clear that for some players, the celebrations might be a bit bittersweet.
“You try not to get too carried away with the celebrations, we’ve worked really hard through the season,” he said. “Some lads like myself haven’t played as much and it’s about going out and enjoying it. We want to win and enjoy it. We need to take the positives and take it into the final game next week.”
Whether or not Elliott stays at Liverpool past this season remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—he’s not content with warming the bench.
