Pregnant Woman Dragged from Her Kitchen and Killed by Crocodile in Horrific Attack

A heavily pregnant woman was killed in a horrifying crocodile attack while cooking in her flooded kitchen in Indonesia last week. The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday 27 May, and it’s left locals shaken and authorities on high alert.

Munirah, 28, was eight months pregnant and preparing lunch when the crocodile suddenly lunged at her from the water that had seeped into her stilt home. The floodwaters had risen after heavy rain caused the nearby Mambulu River in North Kalimantan to burst its banks, pushing dangerous wildlife closer to homes, reported the Daily Star.

According to reports, the crocodile bit into Munirah’s leg and tried to drag her away in a terrifying death roll. Her sister Ana Maria, who was in another room, heard the screams and ran in to help. She found Munirah clutching a tree branch, desperately trying to stay above water. Ana Maria scrambled to find anything to fend off the croc but by the time she returned, her sister had already been pulled into the flood.

Locals began searching frantically along the riverbank. A group of men spotted the crocodile and even fired a shot at it, but it disappeared back into the murky water. About half an hour later, Munirah’s body was found floating lifeless in the floodwaters.

Local police chief AKP Supriadi confirmed the tragic details, saying, “The victim died after being attacked by a crocodile. She was dragged away from her kitchen and drowned to death. She couldn’t be saved. She was eight months pregnant and did not have the strength to fight off the crocodile. The crocodile released her, but she was already dead when her body surfaced.”

The regional disaster response agency also confirmed the incident. Hasanuddin, head of the BPBD Rescue Division in Nunukan Regency, said the report would be officially documented in their evening update. Authorities believe that the flooding brought crocodiles closer to human settlements, raising concerns for people living near rivers or in flood-prone areas.

Munirah’s home, like many others in the area, is built on stilts over water. With the flood making it easier for crocodiles to approach unnoticed, officials are now warning locals to be extra cautious when going about daily tasks near rivers or waterlogged areas.

This horrific attack is not the first of its kind in the region. Last year, a fisherman named Ridwan Nawir was killed in a similar fashion while setting up his nets. Witnesses saw the 50-year-old being dragged into the river just before midday. His body was spotted floating before the crocodile pulled it under.

Mohammad Omarbatha, chief of the local fire brigade, said at the time, “After the missing person was attacked, the crocodile was spotted by witnesses. It held the missing person in its mouth and floated on the surface for a long time before it slowly dived to the bottom of the river and escaped.”

The repeated nature of these attacks is sparking concern across the region, and with floodwaters on the rise, people are being urged to stay alert.
